Welcome to Early Simple Machines – Getting Started! 

In this exciting hands-on course, you’ll discover how simple machines make our world work. Using your STEAM SQUAD BUILD BOX you’ll build 5 amazing projects that teach you all about pibots, balance, spinning and motion. 

What you’ll build:

  • Seesaw – Explore balance and pivot points
  • Fan – Use gears and a propeller to move the air around you! 
  • Spinner – Create your own spinning top with simple parts! 
  • Catapult – Learn how stored energy launches your project. 
  • Drinking Bird – Build a fun moving bird that “drinks” using cams.

Who’s this for?

This course is perfect for young builders ages 4-8 with adult support. Families are invited to build and learn together through creative play right in the comfort of your own home!

Kit Required:

This course is designed to be completed with STEAM SQUAD Build Box – ESM it can also be completed using any kit compatible with LEGO set number 9656!

The Seesaw!
In this project, you’ll build your very own Seesaw using your STEAM SQUAD Build Box! You’ll discover how a seesaw works by exploring: ✅ Balance: What happens when both sides are the same weight? ✅ Pivot Points: Where you place the pivot affects how the seesaw moves! ✅ Real-World Connections: Seesaws are levers — you’ll find levers everywhere once you know what to look for! In this lesson, you’ll: Follow simple step-by-step slides to build your seesaw Watch a short video showing the seesaw in action Test different ways to balance objects — what happens when you change the pivot? The Fan!
In this project, you’ll build your very own Fan using your STEAM SQUAD Build Box! You’ll explore how engineers use gears and axles to make things spin faster or slower — just like a real fan does. In this lesson, you’ll: ✅ Build a Fan model step-by-step using your kit and slides ✅ Watch a short video showing how the gears turn the fan blades ✅ Test how turning the handle makes the blades spin — can you spin it fast? ✅ Learn about gear ratios — what happens when you change the size of the gears? ✅ Take a quick quiz to check what you’ve learned ✅ Upload a photo or video of your spinning Fan to unlock your Gears & Motion Badge! The Spinner
In this project, you’ll build your very own Spinning Top using your STEAM SQUAD Build Box! You’ll discover how spinning toys work — and how engineers design things to stay balanced while spinning. The Catapult
